Case Bound Book #5

 

Today I'm sharing the second book I made last week. 

Hier het tweede boekje dat ik afgelopen week maakte.

As you can see on the photo there is a notch at the left of the book, parallel to the spine. This notch ensures the cover opens smoothly. To make that joint/hinge I put a round 'needle' (some kind of knitting needle) in place at the front and back of the book after I finished it and put everything in a book press for a couple of hours.

Zoals je kan zien op de foto maakte ik links een inkeping (kneep) evenwijdig met de rug. Deze kneep zorgt ervoor dat de harde kaft gemakkelijk kan opendraaien. Om de kneep te maken legde ik nadat het boek klaar was 2 ronde stokjes (of breinaalden) net naast de rug aan de voorkant en de achterkant en stak alles in een boekpers voor een aantal uren. 

I didn't use Japanese paper for this book but a sheet of handmade paper from my stash.

Geen Japans papier gebruikte deze keer maar een vel handgeschept papier uit mijn voorraad.

The signatures were folded out of cream colored paper. For the endpapers I used brown cardstock.

De katernen gevouwen uit crèmekleurig papier. Voor de schutbladen gebruikte ik bruin kaartkarton.

I did the sewing of the book block/ text block on cords again.

Het boekblok/tekstblok opnieuw genaaid op koorden.

I recently discoverd Bitter Melon Bindery on YouTube. Chanel Ly makes very beautiful books and video's. I'm sure I will make more books soon :)

Ik volg sinds kort Bitter Melon Bindery op YouTube. Chanel Ly maakt heel mooie boekjes en video's. Haar filmpjes werken aanstekelijk, er gaan zeker nog boekjes volgen :)

Case Bound Book #4

 

I made a few books lately. A long time ago I attended courses IRL where I learned to make case bound books. Making case bounds books takes a lot of steps, before I could start I had to dig up the notes I made then :)

Weer eens een paar boekje gebonden met harde kaft. Lang geleden volgde ik cursussen waar ik deze "case bound" boekjes leerde maken. Dit type boekjes maken is echt een ambacht, het vraagt veel stappen. Voor ik kon beginnen moest ik er toch mijn nota's van toen bijnemen :)

I decorated the covers of this book with Japanese paper I bought at the paper shop by Adeline Klam in Paris. 

Ik bekleedde de kaft  van dit boekje met Japans papier uit de winkel van Adeline Klam in Parijs.

The book measures approx 10 x 15 cm. 

Het boekje meet ongeveer 10 op 15 cm.

For the signatures I used 80 grs lilac copy paper. The endpapers were folded out of cream colored cardstock. I did the sewing of the signatures on cords.

De katernen werden gevouwen van lila kleurig schrijfpapier van 80 gr. Voor de schutbladen gebruikte ik crèmekleurig cardstock. De katernen genaaid op koordjes.

I finished the book off by adding a bookmark. I also adhered endbands to the head and the tail of the spine. 

In the next post I'll show close-up pictures of the book with the brown cover. 

Helemaal volgens de regels van de kunst kreeg het boekje ook een leeslint en kapitaalband thv de rug.

In de volgende post toon ik close-up foto's van het boekje met bruine kaft.

Japanese Style Booklets

 

Last week I made these 4 small sketchbooks.

Afgelopen week maakte ik deze 4 kleine schetsboekjes.

Each book contains 20 white sheets of sketch paper. The covers are made from thicker paper and all have a black and white pattern.

Elk boekje bevat 20 losse witte blaadjes schetspapier. De kaftjes zijn gemaakt van dikker papier en hebben allemaal een zwart/wit motief. 

I applied four different Japanese stabbindings.

Vier verschillende Japanse bindingen toegepast.

I started with a very simple Japanese stabbinding: "the Four Hole Binding".

Begonnen met een heel eenvoudige Japanse binding: de "Four Hole Binding"

Here you see the "Hemp Leaf Binding".

Dit is de "Hemp Leaf Binding"

I did the "Noble Binding" using pink wax thread.

De "Noble Binding" deed ik met roze wax draad.

For this booklet I've chosen for the "Tortoise Shell Binding".

Bij dit boekje koos ik voor de "Tortoise Shell Binding".

I bought a DIY kit with all the supplies and instructions for the Japanese stabbindings at Papier Rivier Amsterdam. I added wax thread and beads from my stash.

Ik kocht een DIY pakketje met alle materiaal bij Papier Rivier Amsterdam.  Er zaten ook instructies in wat betreft de verschillende bindingen. De verschillende kleuren wax draad en de kralen komen uit mijn eigen voorraad.

Washi Tape Journal

 

I made this washi tape journal after watching a free tutorial by Vintage Page Designs. I have lots of washi tape in my stash, so it was the perfect occasion to use up some of my tape.

Ik maakte dit tape boekje aan de hand van een gratis lesje van Vintage Page Designs. Ik heb zoveel washi tape in mijn voorraad, het leek me een ideale gelegenheid om die ook eens te gaan gebruiken. 

I covered two long strips of paper with lots of washi tape.

Twee lange stroken papier bekleed met véél strookjes washi tape.

For the sections I used 80 grs green copy paper.

Voor de katernen gebruikte ik groen kopieerpapier van 80 gr.

To attach the signatures to both covers I used a 5-hole pamphlet stitch. All the layers were sewn in one go, the covers were turned over afterwards. This is why the stitches aren't visible at the spine. 

Voor de binding een 5-hole pamphlet stitch gebruikt. Alle lagen in 1 keer genaaid en daarna de kaftjes omgeslagen. Vandaar dat de steken op de rug niet zichtbaar zijn.

Choosing the tape was the hardest part :)

De tape uitkiezen was het moeilijkste werkje :)

I created 4 pockets at the inside of the covers, useful to slide in all kinds of stuff.

Ik maakte 4 flappen aan de binnenkant van de kaften waar losse spullen in opgeborgen kunnen worden.

Quickstart Watercolor #3

 

I finally took the time to make another tag for the tag book I'm creating for the Quickstart Watercolor online course by Rae Missigman and Sandi Keen.

Na lange tijd nog eens een label gemaakt voor het labelboekje dat ik maak voor de Quickstart Watercolor online cursus van Rae Missigman en Sandi Keene. 

I painted a branch with watercolor paint and and embellished it with scraps of handmade paper.

Een tak geschilderd met aqaurelverf en gecombineerd met handgeschept papier.

Een aantal van de labels die ik al maakte.

Before binding the tag book I will first finish all the pages. It's easier to work on loose pages.

Pas als alle pagina's klaar zijn ga ik het boekje inbinden. Het is veel makkelijker om op losse pagina's te werken.
