House Book with Cross Stitch Binding

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a 'House Shaped Book with Cross Stitch Binding'.

Het project van deze maand bij de Handmade Book Club is een boek in de vorm van een huis met een kruissteek binding. 

At first glance I thought this whimsical project wasn't my cup of tea but I really wanted to do the cross stitch binding so I came up with a house book in my own style: clean and simple but...colorful :)

Op het eerste zicht dacht ik dat dit project niets voor mij was maar ik wilde heel graag de binding proberen dus kwam ik op het idee om een huis te maken in mijn eigen stijl: simpel maar ...toch kleurrijk :)

I decorated the cover using napkins.

De kaft bekleed met servetten.

The stamp I used on the front cover is an oldie by Darkroom Door.

De stempel die ik op de kaft gebruikte is een oudje van Darkroom Door.

I reinforced the spine using red book cloth.

De rug versterkt met rood boekbindlinnen.

For the 4 signatures I used 250 grs mixed media paper.

Voor de 4 katernen gebruikte ik mixed media papier van 250 gr.

I attached the signatures to the cover applying the 'Cross Stitch Binding'.

De katernen vastgemaakt aan de kaft met behulp van de 'Cross Stitch' binding.

At the inside of the cover I glued yellow handmade paper.

Aan de binnenkant van de kaft kleefde ik geel handgeschept papier.

Each signature has a signature wrapper made of cardstock.

Elke katern kreeg een omslag gemaakt van kaartkarton.

For the wrappers I picked colors that are matching with the cover.

Voor de omslagen koos ik kleuren die passen bij de kaft.

After all I'm happy with how the book turned out.

Uiteindelijk toch blij dat ik het boekje maakte.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

Hyacinths #1

Made these 2 spring cards using the 'Hyacinth' stamp by Different Colors.

Deze 2 lentekaartjes gemaakt met de 'Hyacint' stempel van Different Colors.

For this background I used the 'Abstract Triangles Background Stamp' by Darkroom Door and Catherine Pooler ink 'Lemongrass'.

After stamping I colored the flower with watercolor paint.

Voor de achtergrond werkte ik met de 'Abstract Triangles' achtergrondstempel van Darkroom Door en Catherine Pooler inkt 'Lemongrass'.

Na het stempelen de bloem ingekleurd met aquarelverf.

Added a matching tab made from a strip of home dyed fabric.

Een bijpassend tabje gemaakt van een reepje zelf geverfde stof.

On this card I used the 'Overlapping Blocks Background Stamp' by Darkroom Door and Distress Oxide ink 'Kitsch Flamingo'.

Voor deze kaart gebruikte ik de 'Overlapping Blocks' achtergrondstempel van Darkroom Door en Distress inkt 'Kitsch Flamingo'.

Colored this background using the same colors as I used on the hyacinth.

Voor deze achtergrond gebruikte ik dezelfde kleuren als deze waarmee ik de hyacint inkleurde.

I finished the cards off by stamping a birthday wish.

De kaarten afgewerkt met een gestempelde verjaardagswens.

Easter Cards #2

Two more Easter cards, made with the Easter Bunny stamp by Ludiec.

Hier nog 2 Paaskaartjes, gemaakt met de Paashaas stempel van Ludiec.

For the background of both cards I used a brown paper bag. I crumpled the paper and dry brushed it with white paint.

Voor de achtergrond van beide kaarten gebruikte ik een bruin papieren zakje. Het papier eerst verfrommeld en er witte vegen op gemaakt met witte verf.

After stamping I colored the bunny with watercolor paint.

Na het stempelen de haas gekleurd met aquarelverf.

The checkered pattern was done with a Darkroom Door stamp and Golden Acrylics paint 'Fluorescent Magenta'.

Het hokjes patroon deed ik met een stempel van Darkroom Door en Golden Acrylics verf 'Fluorescent Magenta'.

On this card I adhered strips of patterned paper that I colored with the same fluorescent paint.

I finally added some black and white stamping. Finished the cards off with a button, raffia and cord.

Op deze kaart stroken gedessineerd papier opgeplakt. Dit papier geverfd met dezelfde fluo verf. Nog wit en zwart stempelwerk toegevoegd en de kaarten afgewerkt met een knoop, raffia en koord.

This week I made a few Easter cards. 

On the background of my first card I used a gel print from my stash.

Deze week een aantal kaartjes gemaakt met als thema Pasen. De achtergrond van mijn eerste kaart is een gel print uit mijn voorraad.

After stamping I colored the Easter bunny with watercolor paint.

Na het stempelen kleurde ik de Paashaas met aquarelverf.

I finished the card off by adhering 3 buttons and a piece of paper ribbon.

De kaart afgewerkt door 3 knoopjes en een reep papieren lint op te plakken.

Soft Cover Coptic Stitch

 

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a Soft Cover Coptic Stitch Binding.

Het project van deze maand bij de Handmade Book Club is een 'Soft Cover Coptic Stitch Binding'.

Artist in Residence this month is Bari Zaki.

Gast artieste deze maand is Bari Zaki.

I made lots of coptic bindings in the past but always with a hard cover.

Ik naaide al veel koptische bindingen maar de boeken hadden altijd een harde kaft.

Bari's technique allowed me to use lightweight Japanese paper.

Bari's techniek liet me toe om met het dunnere Japans papier te werken.

There was no wet glue or cardboard involved but I did end up with a very sturdy cover.

Er kwam geen lijm of karton aan te pas en toch is de kaft heel stevig.

For the 6 signatures I used 200 grs Canson mixed media paper.

Voor de 6 katernen gebruikte ik Canson mixed media papier van 200 gr.

The paper was torn instead of cut, love the frayed edges.

Het papier gescheurd in plaats van geknipt. Dat zorgt voor mooie rafelige randen.

Dit is hoe de binnenkant van de kaft eruit ziet.

Secret Belgian Binding

 

Inside the Handmade Book Club there is an archive with lots of tutorials. For this book I was inspired by one of these tutorials. 

De Handmade Book Club heeft een archief met heel veel lessen over boekbinden.

Dit boek is geïnspireerd op één van die lesjes. 

The binding is called 'Secret Belgian Binding'.

Het betreft een 'Secret Belgian Binding'

This type of binding was on my to do list for a very long time. Finally gave it a try!

Deze binding staat al lang op mijn 'to do' lijst. Eindelijk geprobeerd!

On the cover I used Japanese paper. On the spine I used handmade book cloth.

De kaften bekleed met Japans papier. Voor de rug gebruikte ik zelfgemaakt boekbindlinnen.

At the back of the covers I adhered fuchsia handmade paper.

De binnenkant van de kaften werden bekleed met fuchsia handgeschept papier.

The sewing was done in two steps. First I sewed the front and back cover to the spine.

Het naaien gebeurde in twee stappen. Eerst naaide ik de voor- en achterkaft aan de rug.

Next I sewed in the 8 sections.

Vervolgens naaide ik de 8 katernen aan de rug.

For the sections I used drawing paper.

Voor de katernen werkte ik met tekenpapier.

In the past I made case bindings using the same type of Japanese paper.

In het verleden al 'case bindings' gemaakt met hetzelfde Japanse papier.

Saddle Stitch Binding

 

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a Saddle Stitch Binding.

Het project van deze maand bij de Handmade Book Club is een 'Saddle Stitch Binding'.

I made a set of 3 books applying this binding.

Ik maakte een reeks van 3 boekjes met deze binding.

For the covers I used canvas sheets from a canvas pad.

Voor de kaften werkte ik met canvas van een canvas blok.

I added circles on top using a stencil and Amsterdam Acrylic Paint.

Ik maakte cirkels op het canvas met behulp van een stencil en acrylverf.

Each book has one thick signature of 200 grs mixed media paper.

Elk boekje telt slechts 1 lijvige katern, gemaakt van mixed media papier van 200 gr.

For the closure I used elastic cord.

Voor de sluiting gebruikte ik ronde elastiek.

The Saddle Stitch was done with fuchsia waxed linen thread.

Genaaid met fuchsia gewaxt linnen garen.

De groene versie.

The canvas was a bit flimsy so I glued handmade paper to the back of each piece of canvas.

Het canvas viel wat dun uit dus ik lijmde handgeschept papier op de achterkant van elk vel canvas.

I decorated the elastic cord with fabric strips and ribbon.

Het elastiek versierd met lint en stroken stof.

All ribbon and fabric strips are scraps from previous projects and painted by myself.

Alle stroken stof en lint zijn restjes van eerdere projecten en zijn zelf geverfd.

Love the colorful closures.

Blij met de kleurige sluitingen.
