Ultimate Coptic Binding

Each month there is a new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. In March it was an ultimate coptic binding.

Ali Manning showed us how to make a stable and durable book with a coptic binding.

Love the exposed spine.

I made my own book cloth from Tilda fabric.

I used that book cloth to decorate the outside covers of both books.

For the signatures of this book I worked with colored paper.

To add interest I added a signature wrapper to the first and last signature.

Ali gave us lots of tips and tricks to make long and even stitches.

Fodder Challenge 2024 #5

Last month I joined Fodder Challenge 2024, an online event hosted by Willa Wanders aka Wendy Solganik.
During October a bunch of artists taught us how to make the most amazing collage fodder.
I made these bottle cap memory medals for the lesson by Jack Ravi.

On this diptyque I used 2 parts of one and the same photo.

For this project I used photos from my childhood.

I decorated the medals with fabric, buttons, pompons, embroidery stitches, charms and more...

Far out of my comfort zone but I'm happy with the result.

The medals are wearable but I think I'll leave them in my craft room :)

Recycled Fabric Basket #1

I took an online course at Craft School Oz recently and learned how to make recycled fabric baskets.

On this basket I applied the coiling technique.

I used cord, strips of fabric and raffia.

The final row of raffia blanket stitches turned out a bit wobbly so I added crochet stitches to finish the basket off.

Happy with how this one turned out. I'm already working on another one. The possibilities with this coiling technique are endless. And there are so much materials that can be used to make these recycled fabric baskets.

Birds

For the background of these 4 cards I've worked with gel prints from my stash.

To create the birds I used various scraps of fabric and felt.

I followed the instructions by the very talented Buffy Greer aka b2xb2.

Inside the Handmade Book Club Buffy has a tutorial on how to make birds like this.
The birds were machine stitched onto a layer of felt.

I finished the cards off with stamps by Darkroom Door.

Triple Chain Stitch

Ali Manning from the 'Handmade Book Club' has a lot of free tutorials on YouTube as well. I made this book after watching this video. Instead of a leather cover I used a felt cover.

During 2024 I'm aiming to use up things from my stash as often as possible. I bought the pink piece of felt at a craft fair once. I loved the color and the sturdiness of the felt. Not sure what to do with it at that time but now I could finally use it.

The 'Triple Chain Stitch' requires 3 signatures. I wanted the signatures to have some volume so I used a thicker Khadi paper.

The 'Triple Chain Stitch' is a binding from a book by Keith Smith.

In my opinion the plain cover looked a bit boring so I looked in my stash and stumbled upon this very old iron-on application.

Love the torn/frayed edges of the Khadi paper.

Fabric Cover #2

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Books with fabric covers was the topic in March.
For my second take on this challenge I worked with the fabric of an old pair of jeans.

For the 6 signatures I used Khadi paper. Khadi paper is handmade paper from India and is made from 100 % recycled cotton rag. Love the torn edges.

I attached the signatures to the cover with a chain stitch.

For the inside cover and the bird I worked with Tilda fabric.

Inside the 'Handmade Book Club' there is a monthly guest workshop. During March Buffy Greer from B2XB2 taught us how to make an appliqué bird. For the bird on the front cover I followed her instructions and pattern.

The book closes with buttons and home dyed ribbon.

To prevent the fabric from fraying I added blanket stitches to the edges of the book.

Fabric Cover #1

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Books with fabric covers was the topic in March.

First I had to dig up some nice fabric.

I've chosen Tilda fabric for the outside covers and matching green and pink cotton fabric for the inside covers.

I attached the 6 signatures to the cover using a Long Stitch - Link Stitch binding.

As interlining I used fusible webbing. To extra secure all the layers I embroidered a few French Knots.

Opstrijkbare gewatteerde tussenvoering gebruikt.

I decorated the edges with a blanket stitch.

De randen afgewerkt met een dekensteek.

For the signatures I used sketch paper (book on top) and drawing paper.

The pages open flat, ideal to work in.

As a closure I attached home dyed ribbon with a button to the front and back cover.
