Easter Cards #1

 

This week I made a few Easter cards. 

On the background of my first card I used a gel print from my stash.

Deze week een aantal kaartjes gemaakt met als thema Pasen. De achtergrond van mijn eerste kaart is een gel print uit mijn voorraad.

After stamping I colored the Easter bunny with watercolor paint.

Na het stempelen kleurde ik de Paashaas met aquarelverf.

I finished the card off by adhering 3 buttons and a piece of paper ribbon.

De kaart afgewerkt door 3 knoopjes en een reep papieren lint op te plakken.

Soft Cover Coptic Stitch

 

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a Soft Cover Coptic Stitch Binding.

Het project van deze maand bij de Handmade Book Club is een 'Soft Cover Coptic Stitch Binding'.

Artist in Residence this month is Bari Zaki.

Gast artieste deze maand is Bari Zaki.

I made lots of coptic bindings in the past but always with a hard cover.

Ik naaide al veel koptische bindingen maar de boeken hadden altijd een harde kaft.

Bari's technique allowed me to use lightweight Japanese paper.

Bari's techniek liet me toe om met het dunnere Japans papier te werken.

There was no wet glue or cardboard involved but I did end up with a very sturdy cover.

Er kwam geen lijm of karton aan te pas en toch is de kaft heel stevig.

For the 6 signatures I used 200 grs Canson mixed media paper.

Voor de 6 katernen gebruikte ik Canson mixed media papier van 200 gr.

The paper was torn instead of cut, love the frayed edges.

Het papier gescheurd in plaats van geknipt. Dat zorgt voor mooie rafelige randen.

Dit is hoe de binnenkant van de kaft eruit ziet.

Secret Belgian Binding

 

Inside the Handmade Book Club there is an archive with lots of tutorials. For this book I was inspired by one of these tutorials. 

De Handmade Book Club heeft een archief met heel veel lessen over boekbinden.

Dit boek is geïnspireerd op één van die lesjes. 

The binding is called 'Secret Belgian Binding'.

Het betreft een 'Secret Belgian Binding'

This type of binding was on my to do list for a very long time. Finally gave it a try!

Deze binding staat al lang op mijn 'to do' lijst. Eindelijk geprobeerd!

On the cover I used Japanese paper. On the spine I used handmade book cloth.

De kaften bekleed met Japans papier. Voor de rug gebruikte ik zelfgemaakt boekbindlinnen.

At the back of the covers I adhered fuchsia handmade paper.

De binnenkant van de kaften werden bekleed met fuchsia handgeschept papier.

The sewing was done in two steps. First I sewed the front and back cover to the spine.

Het naaien gebeurde in twee stappen. Eerst naaide ik de voor- en achterkaft aan de rug.

Next I sewed in the 8 sections.

Vervolgens naaide ik de 8 katernen aan de rug.

For the sections I used drawing paper.

Voor de katernen werkte ik met tekenpapier.

In the past I made case bindings using the same type of Japanese paper.

In het verleden al 'case bindings' gemaakt met hetzelfde Japanse papier.

Saddle Stitch Binding

 

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a Saddle Stitch Binding.

Het project van deze maand bij de Handmade Book Club is een 'Saddle Stitch Binding'.

I made a set of 3 books applying this binding.

Ik maakte een reeks van 3 boekjes met deze binding.

For the covers I used canvas sheets from a canvas pad.

Voor de kaften werkte ik met canvas van een canvas blok.

I added circles on top using a stencil and Amsterdam Acrylic Paint.

Ik maakte cirkels op het canvas met behulp van een stencil en acrylverf.

Each book has one thick signature of 200 grs mixed media paper.

Elk boekje telt slechts 1 lijvige katern, gemaakt van mixed media papier van 200 gr.

For the closure I used elastic cord.

Voor de sluiting gebruikte ik ronde elastiek.

The Saddle Stitch was done with fuchsia waxed linen thread.

Genaaid met fuchsia gewaxt linnen garen.

The canvas was a bit flimsy so I glued handmade paper to the back of each piece of canvas.

Het canvas viel wat dun uit dus ik lijmde handgeschept papier op de achterkant van elk vel canvas.

I decorated the elastic cord with fabric strips and ribbon.

Het elastiek versierd met lint en stroken stof.

All ribbon and fabric strips are scraps from previous projects and painted by myself.

Alle stroken stof en lint zijn restjes van eerdere projecten en zijn zelf geverfd.

Love the colorful closures.

Blij met de kleurige sluitingen.

Long Stitch Binding with Gathering Stitch

 

I recently made a book with a fabric wrap-around cover.

Ik maakte onlangs een boek met een stoffen kaft met omslag.

I was inspired by a project that is in 'Handmade Books at Home' by Chanel Ly, owner of Bitter Melon Bindery.

Ik raakte geïnspireerd door een project uit het boek 'Handmade Books at Home' van Chanel Ly, eigenares van Bitter Melon Bindery.

For the cover I attached two layers of heavy-weight fabric with heat 'n bond fusible interfacing.

Voor de kaft bevestigde ik twee lagen stevige stof met 'heat 'n bond'. Dat is een soort versteviging die je opstrijkt en die aan twee kanten kleeft.

I treated the edges with a blanket stitch.

De randen tegen uitrafelen beschermd met een dekensteek.

De binding is een 'long stitch binding with gathering stitch'.

The book has 7 sections.

Het boek telt 7 katernen.

For the sections I used 120 grs off white writing paper.

Voor de katernen gebruikte ik off white schrijfpapier van 120 gr.

The sewing was done with blue waxed linen thread.

Ik naaide met blauwe gewaxte linnen draad.

For the closure I set an eyelet into the cover and attached 2 pieces of satin ribbon.

Als sluiting bevestigde ik een nestelringetje in de flap en maakte er 2 stukken satijnen lint aan vast.
