Birds

For the background of these 4 cards I've worked with gel prints from my stash.

Voor de achtergrond van deze 4 kaarten koos ik gel prints uit mijn voorraad.

To create the birds I used various scraps of fabric and felt.

Om de vogels te maken allerlei restjes stof en vilt gebruikt.

 I followed the instructions by the very talented Buffy Greer aka b2xb2.

Ik volgde de instructies van de zeer getalenteerde Buffy Greer van b2xb2.

Inside the Handmade Book Club Buffy has a tutorial on how to make birds like this.

The birds were machine stitched onto a layer of felt. 

Voor de Handmade Book Club maakte Buffy instructiefilmpjes waarin ze toont hoe je deze vogels maakt. Ik stikte ze op een onderlaag van vilt.

I finished the cards off with stamps by Darkroom Door.

De kaarten afgewerkt met stempels van Darkroom Door.

Laced In Concertina Binding

 

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Last month Ali taught us how to do a 'Laced In Concertina Binding'. 

Elke maand post Ali Manning een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Vorige maand leerde ze ons hoe een 'Laced In Concertina Binding' gemaakt wordt.

This structure is based on a medieval laced limp binding. At that time parchment or vellum was used for the covers in combination with laces/straps. Here a twist is added by using modern materials and including a concertina spine. This spine will allow for expansion of the signatures so items such as photos and keepsakes can be added easily.

De structuur is gebaseerd op een Middeleeuwse ingeregen binding met slappe kaft. Toen werd meestal perkament of vellum gebruikt voor de kaften in combinatie met veters/linten. 

Hier is voor een twist gezorgd door te kiezen voor moderne materialen en een harmonica gevouwen rug toe te voegen. Deze zorgt voor extra ruimte tussen de katernen zodat er gemakkelijk foto's en dergelijke kunnen opgeplakt worden zonder dat het boek gaat openstaan.

I sewed each section into the concertina folded spine and over tapes. For the tapes I used embroidered ribbon.

De katernen werden genaaid in een harmonica gevouwen rug en over tapes. Voor de tapes gebruikte ik geborduurd lint.

For the cover I used Zaansch Board. Zaansch Board is a very sturdy paper and is made in the Netherlands in a paper mill, a typically Dutch wind mill. The paper is also special because it's made from old cotton rags.

I added a green signature wrapper to each signature. Together with the concertina folded spine it makes nice lines, as  you can see in the photo. 

Voor de kaft koos ik Zaansch Bord. Zaansch Bord is heel stevig papier dat in Nederland gemaakt wordt in een papiermolen, zo'n typische Hollandse windmolen. Het papier wordt gemaakt van oude katoenen lompen.

Elke katern kreeg een omslag in een groene tint papier. Dat zorgt samen met de de harmonica vouw op de rug voor een mooi lijnenspel.

I attached the text block to the front and back cover by lacing in the ribbon.

For the closure I wrapped a piece of lilac suède cord several times around the book. I attached 2 large drop-shaped beads to the cord.

Het boekblok werd aan de voor- en achterkaft bevestigd door het lint in te weven.

Voor de sluiting wikkelde ik een stukje lila suède koord verschillende keren rond het boek. Aan het koord 2 grote groene kralen in druppelvorm bevestigd.

I added an extra fold to the front and back cover. This way I was able to hide the frayed edges of the ribbon.

De kaft kreeg zowel voor als achter een extra omslag. Zo kon ik de rafelige uiteinden van het lint verbergen.

The cover material is very sturdy and was the perfect paper for this job. The weaving of the rather thick ribbon through the slits on the cover went surprisingly well. Nothing tore out :)

Het Zaansch Bord is heel stevig en was ideaal voor deze klus. Het weven van het tamelijk dik lint doorheen de insneden ging verrassend goed. Niets scheurde uit :)

Three Piece Bradel Binding

 

I recently bought 'Handmade Books at Home', a book by Chanel Ly, creator of Bitter Lemon Bindery. 

In this book there is a tutorial on how to make a 'Three Piece Bradel Binding'. To make today's books I followed these instructions.

Ik kocht onlangs het boek 'Handmade Books at Home', een boek van Chanel Ly van Bitter Lemon Bindery.

In het boek staat de werkwijze uitgelegd voor het maken van een 'Three Piece Bradel Binding'. Voor de boeken van vandaag volgde ik deze instructies.

It was the first time I explored this type of binding and I'm quite happy with how the books turned out. The instructions in Chanel's book are very clear and detailed. 

Het was de eerste keer dat ik deze binding uitprobeerde en ik ben wel blij met het resultaat. De instructies in het boek van Chanel zijn heel duidelijk en gedetailleerd.

I started by making book cloth. I looked for cute Tilda fabrics and added a paper backing to the fabric with the help of heat 'n bond and my iron. The paper backing makes the fabric stronger and prevents glue leaking through the fabric while adhering the fabric to the grey board covers.

Ik begon met het maken van boekbindlinnen. Ik zocht mooie Tilda stofjes en bevestigde een papierlaag aan de achterkant van de stof met de hulp van heat 'n bond en mijn strijkijzer. Deze papierlaag maakt de stof steviger en zorgt er vooral voor dat er geen lijm doorsijpelt naar de voorkant van de stof tijdens het lijmen van de stof op de kartonnen kaften.

'Three Piece Bradel Binding' is a variation on case binding where the spine and covers are separate parts and can be made with different fabrics/materials.

'Three Piece Bradel Binding' is een variatie op case binding. De rug en de kaften bestaan hier uit aparte delen zodat ze ook van verschillende stofjes/materialen gemaakt kunnen worden.

For the spine I've chosen a linen fabric in a solid color.

Voor de rug koos ik linnen in een effen kleur.

I added endbands to the head and tail and a book mark.

Elk boek kreeg ook een leeslint en kapitaalband.

For the inside pages I used a 120 grs off white writing paper.

Voor de pagina's werkte ik met off white schrijfpapier van 120 gr.

There are a lot more bookbinding tutorials in Chanel's book. I'll definitely try a few other bindings soon.

Er staan nog veel meer instructies voor toffe boeken in Chanel's boek. Ik ga er zeker snel nog iets uit maken.

Triple Chain Stitch

 

Ali Manning from the 'Handmade Book Club' has a lot of free tutorials on YouTube as well. I made this book after watching this video. Instead of a leather cover I used a felt cover.

Ali Manning van de 'Handmade Book Club' heeft ook een groot aantal gratis instructiefilmpjes op YouTube staan. Ik maakte dit boekje na het bekijken van deze video. In plaats van leder gebruikte ik vilt voor de kaft.

During 2024 I'm aiming to use up things from my stash as often as possible. I bought the pink piece of felt at a craft fair once. I loved the color and the sturdiness of the felt. Not sure what to do with it at that time but now I could finally use it. 

Dit jaar wil ik proberen zoveel mogelijk spullen uit mijn voorraad op te gebruiken voor mijn projecten. Ik kocht dit lapje roze vilt ooit eens op een hobbybeurs. Ik vond de kleur mooi en het vilt voelde ook mooi stevig aan. Op dat moment had ik nog geen project voor ogen dus het lapje belandde bij mijn voorraad. Nu kon ik het eindelijk gaan gebruiken. 

The 'Triple Chain Stitch' requires 3 signatures. I wanted the signatures to have some volume so I used a thicker Khadi paper.

Voor de 'Triple Chain Stitch' binding zijn 3 katernen nodig. Ik wilde dat de katernen wat volume hadden dus ik maakte ze van dik en stevig Khadi papier.

In my opinion the plain cover looked a bit boring so I looked in my stash and stumbled upon this very old iron-on application.

Ik vond de effen kaft nogal saai dus ik zocht in mijn voorraad en botste op een oude opstrijkbare applicatie.

Love the torn/frayed edges of the Khadi paper.

Ik vind de gescheurde/gerafelde randen van het Khadi papier heel mooi.

Notebook in a Tin #2

Elke maand post Ali Manning een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Deze maand leert ze ons hoe je een vlak openvallend notaboekje maakt dat in een blikje past. 

I collected tins for a while so this challenge is right up my alley :)

A long time ago I bought two sets of cards during a trip in the UK. These cards came in the cutest tins, hence I bought them. For today's project I used one of those tins. 

In een ver verleden verzamelde ik blikjes dus deze uitdaging past helemaal in mijn straatje :)

Lang geleden kocht ik twee sets kaarten tijdens een reis in de UK. Deze kaarten zaten in de mooiste blikjes, vandaar dat ik ze kocht natuurlijk. Voor het project van vandaag koos ik één van die blikjes.

At the bottom of the tin, a reminder of what was in it. Unfortunately all the cards are already gone so I had to look for a matching card (in what was leftover in the other tin) to use on the cover of my book.

Op de onderkant van het blikje is een herinnering te vinden aan wat er in zat. Jammer genoeg zijn alle kaarten al lang verstuurd. Ik moest dus zoeken naar een bijpassende kaart in wat over was van de andere set om te gebruiken voor de kaft van mijn boekje.

The binding is a combination of a 'Perfect Binding' and a 'French Link Stitch'.

A 'Perfect Binding' is a binding where only glue is used to hold the signatures together. I used the same binding on these notebooks.

De binding is een combinatie van een 'Perfect Binding' waarbij alleen lijm gebruikt wordt om de katernen bij mekaar te houden en een 'French Link Stitch'. Ik gebruikte deze binding ook voor deze notaboekjes.

After glueing the spine of the text block I adhered the front and back cover. Therefore I simply cut a greeting card in two. The back of the card has a print as well so I used it on the back cover.

Na het lijmen van de rug van de tekstblok bevestigde ik de kaften. Daarvoor sneed ik een wenskaart middendoor. De achterkant van de kaart is ook bedrukt, dus deze kon ook als kaft dienen.

For the 8 signatures I used 300 grs watercolor paper. With my 'Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper' I rounded the corners on the fore edge of the book.

Voor de 8 katernen gebruikte ik aquarelpapier van 300 gr. Met mijn 'Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper' rondde ik de hoekjes aan de voorrand van het boekje af.

The lift out ribbon with the tag was originally in the tin. 

Het lint met het label zat origineel in het blikje, een meevaller.
