I recently joined the Handmade Book Club by Vintage Page Designs. The Handmade Book Club is an online community of bookbinders from all over the world.

Ik werd onlangs lid van de Handmade Book Club van Vintage Page Designs. De Handmade Book Club is een online club van boekbinders van over de hele wereld. 

Each month Ali Mannings posts a brand new bookbinding project.

For this book I was inspired by the October project: Pamphlet Palooza.

Elke maand post Ali Mannings een nieuw project. 

Voor dit boek werd ik geïnspireerd door het project van oktober: Pamphlet Palooza. 

It involved a lot of weaving on the spine. 

Er moest geweven worden op de rug van het boek.

I was able to use up some of my ribbons.

Zo kon ik een deeltje van mijn collectie lintjes wegwerken.

For the covers I used gel prints from my stash.

Voor de kaften gebruikte ik gel prints van mijn voorraad.

For the signature wrappers I've chosen colors that coordinate with the colors on the covers.

Voor het papier van de omslagen rond de katernen koos ik kleuren die matchen met de kleuren van de kaften.

I folded a signature wrapper for each of the 12 signatures. 

Voor elk van de 12 katernen een omslag gevouwen.

The book measures 10 x 15 cm.

Het boekje meet 10 x 15 cm.

Coptic Gratitude Journal Challenge

 

At the beginning of the month I took part in the "Coptic Gratitude Journal Challenge" by Vintage Page Designs.

In het begin van de maand oktober nam ik deel aan de "Coptic Gratitude Journal Challenge" van Vintage Page Designs.

During this course I made this square journal with hard covers. 

Tijdens deze lessenreeks maakte ik dit vierkante boekje met harde kaften.

I folded 4 signatures from 130 gr sketchbook paper and I used a coptic stitch for the binding.

Ik vouwde 4 katernen van schetsboek papier van 130 gr. De katernen werden aan de kaften bevestigd met een koptische binding. 

For each of the signatures I folded a signature wrapper.

Voor elk van de katernen vouwde ik een omslag van gedessineerd papier.

The pockets can be used to hold all kinds of stuff.

In deze omslagen kunnen dingen opgeborgen worden.

On the covers and for the orange signature wrappers I used Japanese paper I bought at the lovely paper store by Adeline Klam in Paris.

Voor de kaften en de oranje omslagen gebruikte ik Japans papier dat ik kocht in de mooie papierwinkel van Adeline Klam in Parijs.

I attached 2 pieces of ribbon to the front and back cover to use as a closure.

Om het boek te kunnen sluiten bevestigde ik 2 stroken lint aan beide kaften.

Fabric Journal

 

Last week I made a book with a summery look.

 

Vorige week een boekje gemaakt met een zomerse uitstraling.

The cover was made from a sturdy pink fabric for coats. For the inside of the cover I used green felt.

De kaft maakte ik van stevige roze mantelstof. Voor de binnenkant van de kaft koos ik groen vilt. 

I attached the felt to the pink fabric by sewing the blanket stitch all around the edges of the cover using green DMC embroidery thread. Before starting the sewing I ironed on the cherries (an appliqué piece) to the front cover.

Stof en vilt aan mekaar vast gemaakt met de dekensteek. Alle randen omboord met deze steek, hiervoor gebruikte ik groen DMC garen. Voor het naaien eerst nog een opstrijkbare kersen applicatie aangebracht.

I folded Khadi paper in half and nested 2 pages into each other to make one signature. The book counts 6 signatures or 48 pages in total.

Het boekje bestaat uit 6 katernen van telkens 2 dubbele pagina's Khadi papier. In totaal telt het boek dus 48 bladzijden. 

I attached the signatures to the cover using a variation on the long stitch. I did the sewing with waxed thread.

De katernen aan de kaft genaaid met een variatie op de langsteek. Om te naaien gebruikte ik gewaxte draad.

Case Bound Book #6

 

A while ago I tried to make bookcloth myself. 

Een tijdje geleden probeerde ik zelf boekbindlinnen te maken.

I searched for scraps of soft pink, blue and beige linen fabric in my stash, I ordered some 'Heat 'n Bond' and watched a tutorial by Bitter Melon Bindery. After that I was ready to give it a try. I attached the paper to the back of the linen fabric with the help of my iron and some Heat 'n Bond. A very simple and easy way to paperback any fabric.

Ik zocht restjes zachtroze, beige en blauw linnen in mijn voorraad, ik bestelde een rolletje 'Heat 'n Bond' en bekeek een instructiefilmpje van Bitter Melon Bindery. 

Ik bevestigde papier op de achterkant van het linnen door het opstrijken van Heat 'n Bond. Dit is een zeer eenvoudige en makkelijke manier om boekbindlinnen te maken.

I decided to make 3 identical case bound books with the bookcloth. So I looked for matching endpapers and ribbon to use as a bookmark.

Ik besloot om 3 identieke 'case bound' boekjes te maken met het boekbindlinnen. Dus ik ging op zoek naar bijpassend papier voor de schutbladen en stukjes lint om te gebruiken als bladwijzer.

I used a French Link Stitch to bind the text blocks. 

Om de boekblokken te naaien koos ik voor een 'French Link Stitch'.

For the inside papers I used 200 grs copy paper.

Voor de bladzijden gebruikte ik schrijfpapier van 200 gr.

The headbands/endbands are handmade as well :)

De kapitaalbanden maakte ik ook zelf deze keer :)

I accidentally spilled some glue on the blue paper so I cut away the messy part and made a pocket. Problem solved :)

Ik morste per ongeluk lijm op het blauwe papier dus sneed ik er een stukje af en maakte een 'pocket' achteraan in het boekje. Probleem opgelost :)

I never made landscape size case bound  books before. The books measure 15 x 21 cm.

Dit liggend formaat 'case bound' boekjes maakte ik niet eerder. De boekjes meten 15 x 21 cm.

For the pockets and the endpapers I used paper by Masterpiece design.

Voor de 'pockets' en de schutbladen werkte ik met papier van Masterpiece design.

Bookcloth is the perfect material for decorating book covers. Once backed with paper the linen fabric becomes very sturdy. These books will last a long time :)

It's easy to apply glue to the paper side of the linen and what's more important, the glue doesn't leak through.

Boekbindlinnen leent zich uitstekend om kaften mee te bekleden. Eens het linnen bekleed is met een laagje papier wordt het heel stevig. Deze boeken zullen dus nog lang meegaan :)

Lijm aanbrengen op de papierlaag gaat makkelijk, de lijm lekt ook niet door tot aan de stof. 

No glue spots on these endpapiers so no pockets required :)

Hier geen lijm gemorst dus 'pockets' waren niet nodig :)

Fodder Challenge #3

 

During Fodder Challenge 2023 Sarah Gardner taught us how to make 'Woven Fodder Papers'. I colored the backgrounds with ecoline ink and made the patterns using a dip pen and ink. 

Tijdens Fodder Challenge 2023 leerde Sarah Gardner ons hoe je 'Woven Fodder Papers' maakt.

Ik kleurde de achtergronden met ecoline inkt en tekende de patronen met 'old school' pen en inkt.
