No Glue Slipcase Accordion Book

The September book at the Handmade Book Club is a 'No Glue Slipcase Accordion Book'.

Artist in Residence this month is Shawn Sheehy.

De gastdocent deze maand is Shawn Sheehy.

He taught us how to make a no glue, no thread structure.

Each book holds 6 accordion folded signatures, connected by interlocking tabs and slots.

Elk boekje bevat 6 accordeon gevouwen katernen.

For the slipcase there was a lot of precision cutting and folding involved.

Totally my cup of tea :)

Helemaal mijn ding :)

So I made 3 books and slipcases.

Dus maakte ik 3 exemplaren.

I used contrasting colors for the cover and the slipcase.

I folded the signatures from 210 grs mixed media paper.

For the covers and slipcases I used colored cardstock.

It was a fun project.

Het was een heel leuk project.

Summer Creative Retreat 2026 #2

Out of the more than 60 lessons over at the Summer Creative Retreat 2026 I picked a bookbinding lesson :)

I made 2 junk journals decorated with pompons.

Ik maakte 2 'junk journals' versierd met pompons.

It were the pompons that caught my eye of course :)

I glued fabric on the front covers...

Op de kaften plakte ik stof...

...and felt inside.

...en aan de binnenkant vilt.

Did the binding with a simple pamphlet stitch.

I filled the books with all kinds of junk paper from my stash.

The Art of the Hinge

Theme of this month's project at the Handmade Book Club is 'Art of the Hinge'.

Artist in Residence this month is Bari Zaki. She taught us this ingenious binding.

Gast artieste deze maand is Bari Zaki. Zij leerde ons deze vindingrijke binding.

The hard covers were decorated with homemade book cloth and handmade paper.

The wrapped spine is an eye catcher.

De omwikkelde rug is een blikvanger.

For the spine and for the hinges I used pink homemade book cloth.
The book holds 6 signatures and is set up as a photo album.

Instead of photos I used a set of postcards by Noortje Van Den Noort.

There was a lot of measuring and precision involved but I love how the single sheet binding turned out.

I decorated the inside of the covers with the same handmade paper as I used on the outside of the covers.

I have these birds in my stash for ages. Bought them a long time ago with the idea of using them one day on a bookbinding project :)

House Book with Cross Stitch Binding

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a 'House Shaped Book with Cross Stitch Binding'.

At first glance I thought this whimsical project wasn't my cup of tea but I really wanted to do the cross stitch binding so I came up with a house book in my own style: clean and simple but...colorful :)

I decorated the cover using napkins.

De kaft bekleed met servetten.

The stamp I used on the front cover is an oldie by Darkroom Door.

I reinforced the spine using red book cloth.

De rug versterkt met rood boekbindlinnen.

For the 4 signatures I used 250 grs mixed media paper.

I attached the signatures to the cover applying the 'Cross Stitch Binding'.

At the inside of the cover I glued yellow handmade paper.

Each signature has a signature wrapper made of cardstock.

For the wrappers I picked colors that are matching with the cover.

After all I'm happy with how the book turned out.

Soft Cover Coptic Stitch

This month's project at the Handmade Book Club is a Soft Cover Coptic Stitch Binding.

Artist in Residence this month is Bari Zaki.

Gast artieste deze maand is Bari Zaki.

I made lots of coptic bindings in the past but always with a hard cover.

Bari's technique allowed me to use lightweight Japanese paper.

There was no wet glue or cardboard involved but I did end up with a very sturdy cover.

For the 6 signatures I used 200 grs Canson mixed media paper.

The paper was torn instead of cut, love the frayed edges.

Het papier gescheurd in plaats van geknipt. Dat zorgt voor mooie rafelige randen.

This is how the inside of the cover looks like.

Secret Belgian Binding

Inside the Handmade Book Club there is an archive with lots of tutorials. For this book I was inspired by one of these tutorials.

The binding is called 'Secret Belgian Binding'.

Het betreft een 'Secret Belgian Binding'

This type of binding was on my to do list for a very long time. Finally gave it a try!

Deze binding staat al lang op mijn 'to do' lijst. Eindelijk geprobeerd!

On the cover I used Japanese paper. On the spine I used handmade book cloth.

De kaften bekleed met Japans papier. Voor de rug gebruikte ik zelfgemaakt boekbindlinnen.

At the back of the covers I adhered fuchsia handmade paper.

The sewing was done in two steps. First I sewed the front and back cover to the spine.

Next I sewed in the 8 sections.

For the sections I used drawing paper.

Voor de katernen werkte ik met tekenpapier.

In the past I made case bindings using the same type of Japanese paper.
