The Naked Spine Journal #1

 

Recently I took part in "The Naked Spine Journal Class" by Sophie De Cort.

Onlangs schreef ik me in voor de online cursus "The Naked Spine Journal Class"  van Sophie De Cort.

I've been a fan of Sophie's beautiful journals with an open spine for a long time. Now I had the opportunity to learn from her how to make these naked spine journals. Happy me :) 

Ik ben al heel lang fan van het werk van Sophie en van haar boeken met een open rug. En nu kreeg ik de gelegenheid om van haar te leren hoe je zo'n art journals maakt. Dat kon ik niet voorbij laten gaan toch :)

This week I finished two medium size journals. 

Deze week mijn eerste 2 boekjes afgewerkt.

The covers were decorated with fabric that was painted first.

De kaften zijn bekleed met stof die we eerst verfden.

On the spine of this art journal I used the Medium Stencil - Creativity by Darkroom Door.

Voor de letters op de rug van dit art journal gebruikte ik met de Medium Stencil - Creativity van Darkroom Door.

There was a lot of machine stitching involved.

Er kwam veel stikwerk bij kijken.

Some of the inside pages match with the fabric on the covers, no coincidence :)

Sommige van de pagina's binnenin passen goed bij de kleuren van de kaften en dat is geen toeval :)

The signatures were folded out of all kinds of papers from my stash. 

De katernen vouwde ik uit allerlei papier uit mijn voorraad.

I even added a few pages out of an old exercise book that belonged to my father.

Hier zie je een pagina uit een oud schoolschrift van mijn vader.

I really enjoyed the process. There were a lot of steps involved so it took me some time but I love the outcome.

Echt heel tof om te maken deze boekjes. Er kwamen veel stappen aan te pas dus het was redelijk veel werk maar ik ben heel blij met het resultaat.

The binding I applied on this book is slightly different from the binding I used on the first one.

Voor dit boekje een iets andere binding toegepast dan bij het eerste boek.

It will be a pleasure to work in these art journals :)

Ik kan niet wachten om in deze art journals te gaan werken :)

Eco Printing with Flowers

 

I'm currently  joining the "Flowers Magic Challenge" by Francisca Nunes.

We started by making a junk journal. For the cover I used a brown paper bag I received together with an order from 'We Are Knitters'.

"Flowers Magic is a free challenge for mixed media artists and art journal lovers, who love and are inspired by the magic world of flowers."

Ik doe mee met de "Flowers Magic Challenge" van Francisca Nunes. We zijn begonnen met het maken van een junk journal. Voor de kaft van mijn boek gebruikte ik een stevige bruine papieren zak die ik kreeg samen met een bestelling wol van "We Are Knitters".

In the first lessons we learned how to eco print with flowers.

In de eerste lessen leerden we 'eco printen' met bloemen.

I picked this collection of flowers from the garden. I was hoping purples and reds would work well :)

Deze collectie bloemen uit de tuin geplukt. Ik hoopte dat paarse en rode bloemen goed zouden werken :)

I used the new junk journal for the eco printing...

Meteen al mijn nieuwe junk journal gebruikt voor het 'eco printen'...

There was steaming involved :)

Er kwam stoom aan te pas :)

Love the marks the twine made on the cover.

Blij met de afdrukken die het touw maakte op de cover.

It took ages before the book was dry but I'm pleased with some of the results.

Het duurde heel lang voor het boek weer droog was maar ik ben toch tevreden met sommige van de resultaten.

Even the yellow petals of the dahlia made beautiful prints.

Zelfs de gele blaadjes van de dahlia zorgden voor mooie prints.

I'm surprised by the outcome because I only used water and steam to do the printing.

Toch verrast door het resultaat, ondanks dat ik enkel met water en stoom werkte.

This page was folded out of packaging material from flowers.

Deze pagina vouwde ik uit verpakkingsmateriaal van rond een boeket bloemen.

Love how the stamped letters on the kraft paper transferred to the next page.

These are the benefits of eco printing in a junk journal. The water and steam react with the ink, paint, stamped prints on the different pages. This makes the outcome to an even bigger surprise. I also added a spread with inked letters to the junk journal. The ink ran out and made beautiful prints on the other pages and on the back cover.

De gestempelde letters op het bruine papier zijn door het printen getransfereerd op de pagina ernaast. Dat is het extra voordeel van 'eco printen' in een junk journal waar ook gekleurde en gestempelde pagina's in zitten. Alles gaat zijn eigen leven leiden na contact met water en stoom. Ik voegde ook een pagina toe met oefenletters kalligrafie in inkt. De inkt liep uit en transfereerde ook naar de andere pagina's en naar de kaft.

I will be working in this junk journal a lot more for the challenge, so stay tuned...

Willa Journal

 

I recently took part in the online course 'Willa Journals' by Wendy Solganik.  

This is my first Willa Journal, a book with a fabric cover.

Een boek met een stoffen kaft leren maken in de online cursus 'Willa Journals' van Wendy Solganik.

It's a kind of a junk journal that has 2 signatures.

Het werd een soort 'junk journal' bestaande uit 2 katernen.

At the spine I used a piece of felt. 

To attach the signatures to the cover I've chosen a binding from a book by Keith Smith. The binding is called 'Lattice'.  

Op de rug wolvilt verwerkt. 

Ik koos voor een andere binding dan deze die Wendy gebruikte. De binding voor 2 katernen met de naam 'Lattice' komt uit een boek van Keith Smith.

On the cover I did a lot of machine stitching as well as some slow stitching.

Op de cover maakte ik steken met de naaimachine en ook met de hand.

I recently bought some extra large buttons. I could use one of the buttons on the cover of this book already :)

Onlangs hele grote knopen gekocht. Daar kon ik er nu al 1 van gebruiken :)

For the pages of this junk journal I used all kinds of recycled papers.

This page was folded out of a nice paper bag from the beautiful shop by Adeline Klam in Paris.

In een junk journal kan je allerlei gerecycleerd papier kwijt. Deze pagina vouwde ik uit een heel mooi tasje van de prachtige winkel van Adeline Klam in Parijs.

I made a few pockets in which I put postcards. 

In deze pocket kon ik een mooie postkaart kwijt.

In the course Wendy shows all kinds of ways to embellish the pages.

In de cursus toont Wendy allerlei manieren om de pagina's te versieren.

Puzzle Pieces #2

 

There are a lot of restrictions going on all over the world due to covid 19. I thought it would be nice to make a box and garland to send to a loved one we have to miss now. 

I mainly used stamps from the new Puzzle Pieces stamp set by Darkroom Door.

We hebben over de hele wereld te maken met allerlei beperkingen ten gevolge van covid 19. Daarom dacht ik dat het wel leuk zou zijn om een doosje en bijpassende slinger te maken die naar iemand gestuurd kan worden die we moeten missen nu.

Hoofdzakelijk stempels gebruikt van de nieuwe Puzzle Pieces stempelset van Darkroom Door. 

As you already know I'm recycling large matchboxes (12 x 6 x 3 cm) to make these gift boxes. I started by decorating the box as well as the lid with handmade paper.

Zoals je weet hergebruik ik grote luciferdozen (12 x 6 x 3 cm) om deze doosjes te maken. Ik ben begonnen met het decoreren van de doos en de lade met handgeschept papier.

I stamped the large puzzle piece from the Puzzle Pieces stamp set twice on a gel print, stamped text on top and arranged the puzzle pieces to the front of the box together with a few stamped branches.

Twee puzzelstukken gestempeld op een gel print met een stempel uit de Puzzle Pieces stempelset van Darkroom Door. Daar tekst bovenop gestempeld. De puzzelstukjes samen met een aantal gestempelde takjes op de voorkant van het doosje geplakt. 

I wrapped wax linen thread around the gift box and added a few charms. 

The small puzzle pieces are handmade. I did the stamping on shrink plastic to reduce the size of the puzzle piece.

Wax koord in 3 kleuren rond het doosje gewikkeld en versierd met bedeltjes. De kleine puzzeltjes maakte ik van krimpfolie. Een klein puzzelstukje twee keer op krimpfolie gestempeld, uitgeknipt en een gaatje gemaakt. Verhit om het te laten krimpen.

The lid is big enough to hold a garland.

In de lade past een slinger.

The garland was made out of 8 puzzle pieces. I stamped the puzzle pieces on gel prints. 

Ik maakte de slinger van 8 puzzelstukjes. Ik stempelde ze op gel prints.

To create the gel prints I used the new Abstract 09 & Abstract 11 stamp set by Darkroom Door.

Voor de gel prints gebruikte ik de nieuwe Abstract 09 en Abstract 11 stempels van Darkroom Door.

Cutting out all the puzzle pieces was quite a job :)

Al deze stukjes uitknippen was wel een werkje :)

I stamped 'miss you' on top of the garland using stamps from the Alphabet Medley set.

Met stempels van de Alphabet Medley set 'miss you' op de slinger gestempeld.

I made holes in the puzzle pieces and assembled the garland using wax linen thread. I finished the garland off using small pompons.

Gaatjes gemaakt op de zijkant van de puzzelstukjes en alles aan mekaar bevestigd met wax koord. Afgewerkt met kleine pomponnetjes.
