Laced In Concertina Binding

 

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Last month Ali taught us how to do a 'Laced In Concertina Binding'. 

Elke maand post Ali Manning een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Vorige maand leerde ze ons hoe een 'Laced In Concertina Binding' gemaakt wordt.

This structure is based on a medieval laced limp binding. At that time parchment or vellum was used for the covers in combination with laces/straps. Here a twist is added by using modern materials and including a concertina spine. This spine will allow for expansion of the signatures so items such as photos and keepsakes can be added easily.

De structuur is gebaseerd op een Middeleeuwse ingeregen binding met slappe kaft. Toen werd meestal perkament of vellum gebruikt voor de kaften in combinatie met veters/linten. 

Hier is voor een twist gezorgd door te kiezen voor moderne materialen en een harmonica gevouwen rug toe te voegen. Deze zorgt voor extra ruimte tussen de katernen zodat er gemakkelijk foto's en dergelijke kunnen opgeplakt worden zonder dat het boek gaat openstaan.

I sewed each section into the concertina folded spine and over tapes. For the tapes I used embroidered ribbon.

De katernen werden genaaid in een harmonica gevouwen rug en over tapes. Voor de tapes gebruikte ik geborduurd lint.

For the cover I used Zaansch Board. Zaansch Board is a very sturdy paper and is made in the Netherlands in a paper mill, a typically Dutch wind mill. The paper is also special because it's made from old cotton rags.

I added a green signature wrapper to each signature. Together with the concertina folded spine it makes nice lines, as  you can see in the photo. 

Voor de kaft koos ik Zaansch Bord. Zaansch Bord is heel stevig papier dat in Nederland gemaakt wordt in een papiermolen, zo'n typische Hollandse windmolen. Het papier wordt gemaakt van oude katoenen lompen.

Elke katern kreeg een omslag in een groene tint papier. Dat zorgt samen met de de harmonica vouw op de rug voor een mooi lijnenspel.

I attached the text block to the front and back cover by lacing in the ribbon.

For the closure I wrapped a piece of lilac suède cord several times around the book. I attached 2 large drop-shaped beads to the cord.

Het boekblok werd aan de voor- en achterkaft bevestigd door het lint in te weven.

Voor de sluiting wikkelde ik een stukje lila suède koord verschillende keren rond het boek. Aan het koord 2 grote groene kralen in druppelvorm bevestigd.

I added an extra fold to the front and back cover. This way I was able to hide the frayed edges of the ribbon.

De kaft kreeg zowel voor als achter een extra omslag. Zo kon ik de rafelige uiteinden van het lint verbergen.

The cover material is very sturdy and was the perfect paper for this job. The weaving of the rather thick ribbon through the slits on the cover went surprisingly well. Nothing tore out :)

Het Zaansch Bord is heel stevig en was ideaal voor deze klus. Het weven van het tamelijk dik lint doorheen de insneden ging verrassend goed. Niets scheurde uit :)
