Double Herringbone Binding

 

Each month Ali Manning posts a new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. This month it's a book with a leather cover and a 'Double Herringbone' binding'.  

Elke maand verschijnt er een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Deze maand is het een boek met een lederen kaft en een 'Double Herringbone' binding.

I added a fabric lining to the leather. The edges of the fabric frayed a lot so I first applied fray check to the edges. Unfortunately the fray check left some marks after drying. That's the reason I made a row of single crochet stitches around the cover. These stitches prevent further fraying and at the same time hide the fray check marks :)

Eerst stof bevestigd aan de binnenkant van het leder. De stof rafelde erg, daarom  bewerkte ik de randen met een anti-rafel vloeistof. Na het drogen liet deze vloeistof jammer genoeg sporen na op de stof. Daarom haakte ik een rand rond de kaft. De vasten verhinderen verder uitrafelen en verbergen tegelijk ook de vlekjes :)

The crocheting was done with DMC Pearl Cotton N° 5.

Gehaakt met roze DMC Pearl Cotton N°5.

For the four signatures I used Khadi paper.

Vier katernen gevouwen van Khadi papier.

Gampi paper was used for the signature wrappers.

Elke katern kreeg een omslag. Daarvoor gebruikte ik Gampi papier. 

Love the torn edges of the Gampi paper at the fore edge of the book.

De gescheurde randen zorgen voor een mooi effect.

For the binding I used a double herringbone stitch and pink and orange waxed thread.

Voor de binding een dubbele visgraatsteek gebruikt en gewerkt met roze en oranje gewaxte draad.

To close the book I simply wrapped a piece of suede cord around the book.

Voor de sluiting suède koord rond het boek gewikkeld.

Dos-à-Dos Binding

New at the Handmade Book Club is the Uplevel Challenge. It's an extra monthly challenge that invites members to test their bookbinding skills by re-working a project from the Handmade Book Club archives.This month's assignment: Take a book/binding from the archives and create a dos-à-dos version.

Nieuw bij de 'Handmade Book Club' is de 'Uplevel Challenge'.

Dit is een maandelijkse bonus uitdaging waarbij de leden uitgenodigd worden om hun vaardigheden te testen door een boek uit het archief te herwerken. Opdracht van deze maand: kies een boek/binding uit het archief en maak er een dos-à-dos versie van.

A Dos-à-Dos binding is a bookbinding technique where 2 separate books are bound together, sharing a single back cover but opening in opposite directions.

Een Dos-à-Dos binding (letterlijk vertaald rug tegen rug) is een boekbindtechniek waarbij 2 aparte boeken samen gebonden worden. Ze hebben elk een kaft aan de voorkant en elk een rug maar delen eenzelfde achterkant. 

I've chosen a Butterfly Binding from the Handmade Book Club archive. I did the sewing with 6 needles instead of 4.

Ik koos voor een 'Butterfly Binding' uit het archief en naaide die met 6 naalden in plaats van 4.

For the soft covers I used Kozo paper. It's a handmade mulberry paper from Thailand.

Voor de zachte kaften werkte ik met Kozo papier, een handgeschept papier uit Thailand. Het wordt gemaakt van de vezels van de moerbeiboom.

There are 6 signatures on each side, made from watercolor paper.

Elk boek heeft 6 katernen, gemaakt van aquarelpapier.

The first and last signature of each book are sandwiched in between the cover paper.

De eerste en laatste katern van elk boek zit geplooid tussen het papier van de kaften.

Figuring out how to fold the paper for the shared back cover was the hardest part.

Uitzoeken hoe ik de gemeenschappelijke achterkant moest vouwen was het moeilijkste.

Loved this kind of challenge! Had to put my thinking cap on :)

Leuke uitdaging! Geen instructiefilmpjes maar zelf uitzoeken :)

Button Hole Stitch Binding

 

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Last month Ali taught us how to bind a 'Button Hole Stitch' book with a hard cover. 

Elke maand verschijnt er een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Vorige maand leerde Ali ons hoe je een 'Button Hole Stitch' boek maakt met een harde kaft. 

For this project I started by making book cloth. With the help of Heat 'n Bond and my iron I adhered a layer of paper to the back of some dotted Tilda fabric. The paper prevents glue from leaking through the fabric while adhering the fabric to the grey board covers.

Voor dit project ben ik begonnen met het maken van boekbindlinnen. Daarvoor gebruikte ik Tilda stofjes. Met Heat 'n Bond en de warmte van mijn strijkijzer een laag papier aan de achterkant van de stof bevestigd. Het laagje papier verhindert dat er lijm doorheen de stof lekt bij het bevestigen van de stof op het karton van de kaftjes.

Both books measure approx 7" x 4 1/2"

De boekjes meten 17,5 x 11 cm.

For the signatures I used mixed media paper. Because the spine is exposed I added  signature wrappers.

De katernen gemaakt van mixed media papier. Omdat de katernen op de rug zichtbaar zijn kregen ze elk een omslag.

For the pink book I've chosen to work with orange signature wrappers.

Bij het roze boekje koos ik voor oranje omslagen.

I decorated the inside of the covers with pink handmade paper.

De binnenkant van de kaften met roze handgeschept papier bekleed.

Pink and orange, one of my favorite color combinations.

Roze en oranje, één van mijn favoriete kleurencombinaties.

For the binding I applied the 'Button Hole Stitch'.

Voor de binding met de 'Button Hole Stitch' gewerkt.

The exposed spine, the long stitches and the partial signature wrappers provide a nice interplay of lines.

De open rug, de lange steken en de omslagen aan de katernen zorgen samen voor een mooi lijnenspel.

I decorated 2 wooded buttons, one with pink and one with orange handmade paper. Together with a piece of pink elastic cord they make a closure.

Houten 'knopen' beplakt met hetzelfde roze en oranje papier. Samen met een stukje elastiek vormen ze de sluiting.

Long Cross Stitch Binding

 

I recently added another book with a leather cover to my collection.

Mijn collectie boekjes met lederen kaft uitgebreid met een nieuw exemplaar.

Inside the Handmade Book Club there is an archive with lots of tutorials. For this book I was inspired by one of these tutorials. 

De Handmade Book Club heeft een archief met heel veel lessen over boekbinden.

Dit boek is geïnspireerd op één van die lesjes. 

I folded 4 signatures from mixed media paper.

Van mixed media papier 4 katernen gevouwen.

I attached the signatures to the cover using a 'Long Cross Stitch' binding'.

De katernen aan de kaft genaaid met een 'Long Cross Stitch' binding'.

To close the book I put on a large button and a strip of leather. Something went wrong while cutting the slits through which the strip of leather goes. The mistake is now hidden underneath a lot of waxed thread :)

Voor de sluiting werkte ik met een reepje leder en een grote knoop. Er ging iets fout toen ik de gleufjes sneed in de kaft waar het reepje leder doorheen geschoven wordt. De fout verborgen met een flinke hoeveelheid gewaxte draad :)

Here you can see the inside of the cover. I adhered fabric to the back of the leather to make the cover more sturdy.

Hier zie je het katoen waar ik de binnenkant van het leder mee bekleedde. Dit zorgt voor een stevige kaft.
