Eco Printing with Flowers

 

I'm currently  joining the "Flowers Magic Challenge" by Francisca Nunes.

We started by making a junk journal. For the cover I used a brown paper bag I received together with an order from 'We Are Knitters'.

"Flowers Magic is a free challenge for mixed media artists and art journal lovers, who love and are inspired by the magic world of flowers."

Ik doe mee met de "Flowers Magic Challenge" van Francisca Nunes. We zijn begonnen met het maken van een junk journal. Voor de kaft van mijn boek gebruikte ik een stevige bruine papieren zak die ik kreeg samen met een bestelling wol van "We Are Knitters".

In the first lessons we learned how to eco print with flowers.

In de eerste lessen leerden we 'eco printen' met bloemen.

I picked this collection of flowers from the garden. I was hoping purples and reds would work well :)

Deze collectie bloemen uit de tuin geplukt. Ik hoopte dat paarse en rode bloemen goed zouden werken :)

I used the new junk journal for the eco printing...

Meteen al mijn nieuwe junk journal gebruikt voor het 'eco printen'...

There was steaming involved :)

Er kwam stoom aan te pas :)

Love the marks the twine made on the cover.

Blij met de afdrukken die het touw maakte op de cover.

It took ages before the book was dry but I'm pleased with some of the results.

Het duurde heel lang voor het boek weer droog was maar ik ben toch tevreden met sommige van de resultaten.

Even the yellow petals of the dahlia made beautiful prints.

Zelfs de gele blaadjes van de dahlia zorgden voor mooie prints.

I'm surprised by the outcome because I only used water and steam to do the printing.

Toch verrast door het resultaat, ondanks dat ik enkel met water en stoom werkte.

This page was folded out of packaging material from flowers.

Deze pagina vouwde ik uit verpakkingsmateriaal van rond een boeket bloemen.

Love how the stamped letters on the kraft paper transferred to the next page.

These are the benefits of eco printing in a junk journal. The water and steam react with the ink, paint, stamped prints on the different pages. This makes the outcome to an even bigger surprise. I also added a spread with inked letters to the junk journal. The ink ran out and made beautiful prints on the other pages and on the back cover.

De gestempelde letters op het bruine papier zijn door het printen getransfereerd op de pagina ernaast. Dat is het extra voordeel van 'eco printen' in een junk journal waar ook gekleurde en gestempelde pagina's in zitten. Alles gaat zijn eigen leven leiden na contact met water en stoom. Ik voegde ook een pagina toe met oefenletters kalligrafie in inkt. De inkt liep uit en transfereerde ook naar de andere pagina's en naar de kaft.

I will be working in this junk journal a lot more for the challenge, so stay tuned...

Small Stencil - Five Strips #2

 

Here's another card I made for the new release by Darkroom Door.

Next to the 'Small Stencil - Five Strips' I also used an image from the 'Collage Sheets - Elegant Ladies' set on this card.

Nog een kaartje dat ik maakte voor de nieuwe release bij Darkroom Door.

Naast de 'Small Stencil - Five Strips' gebruikte ik hier ook een afbeelding uit de nieuwe 'Collage Sheets - Elegant Ladies' set.

I started by sponging through the stencil with Distress Ink 'Kitsch Flamingo' on white paper. To create a square pattern I turned the stencil 90 degrees and sponged on top of the pink squares with Distress Ink 'Saltwater Taffy'. 

I cut a square out of the sponged print.

Op een stuk wit papier eerst gesponsd doorheen de stencil met Distress Inkt 'Kitsch Flamingo'. De stencil 90 graden gedraaid en nog een keer gesponsd bovenop de roze strepen met Distress Inkt 'Saltwater Taffy'.

Op die manier bekom je een ruitpatroon. Een vierkant uit het sponswerk gesneden.

I looked for a matching photo among the ladies from the 'Elegant Ladies' set.

The birthday wish was stamped with Archival Ink 'Jet Black'.

I glued the sponged panel together with the photo on a piece of paper and wrapped a piece of bakers twine around the paper. I adhered the panel to a top fold white card.

Een bijpassende foto gezocht uit de 'Elegant Ladies' set.

De verjaardagswens gestempeld met Archival Inkt 'Jet Black'.

De ruitjesachtergrond samen met de foto op stevig wit papier geplakt. Een zwart/wit touwtje rond het paneeltje gewikkeld en alles op een dubbele witte kaart geplakt.

I made a spread in my Art Journal using the new 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips' by Darkroom Door. In fact this Art Journal is a vintage book I'm working in.

Ik maakte ook nog een spread in mijn Art Journal met de nieuwe 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips' van Darkroom Door. Dit Art Journal is eigenlijk een oud boek waarin ik werk.

The moment I saw this stencil I was thinking of making a fence with it. And on a fence there are birds of course :)

Van het ogenblik dat ik deze stencil zag dacht ik aan een hek. En op een hek zitten vogels natuurlijk :)

I started by applying a layer of gesso to the vintage book pages. I wanted the text to remain visible so I added only a thin layer of gesso. Next I applied light green and turquoise acrylic ink to the spread. I diluted the ink with water to make drips and kept in mind to leave enough white space. With white acrylic ink I made splatters randomly.

De pagina's van het boek kregen eerst een laagje gesso. Ik smeerde de laag gesso niet te dik want ik wilde dat de tekst nog gedeeltelijk zichtbaar bleef. Daarna met lichtgroene en turquoise acrylinkt de pagina's ingekleurd. De inkt verdund met water en het boek rechtgezet om de inkt te laten uitlopen. 

Erop gelet om niet de hele achtergrond te kleuren. Spetters gemaakt met witte acrylinkt.

I overstamped the background with lime, white and turquoise paint and StazOn Ink 'Teal Blue' and 'Cactus Green'. I used various Darkroom Door stamps to add text, grid, dots, circles and squares.

Op de achtergrond gestempeld met lime, witte en turquoise verf en met StazOn Inkt 'Teal Blue' en 'Cactus Green'. Verschillende Darkroom Door stempels gebruikt om zo tekst, rasters, stippen, cirkels en vierkantjes aan te brengen.

To create the fence I first sponged white paint through the 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips', next red paint. After drying I applied a white wash to every bar of the fence, to create a distressed look. 

I added shadow with a black Stabilo pencil and green PITT pens, did the highlights with a white pen.

Voor het hek sponsde ik eerst met witte, daarna met rode verf doorheen de 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips'. Na het drogen nog een heel dun laagje wit aangebracht bovenop het rood, voor een verweerd effect. Schaduw aangebracht rond de verschillende spijlen van hek met een zwart Stabilo potlood en groene PITT pennen. Highlights aangebracht met een witte pen.

The leaves were stamped on scraps and colored with PITT pens after cutting out.

For the flowers I stamped the 'Texture Stamp - Fallen Leaves' three times on white paper using Archival Ink 'Carnation Red'. I punched a circle out of each print and adhered the 'flowers' to the spread. I drew stems with a black pen and added shadow and highlights to the flowers and stems.

De blaadjes apart gestempeld, uitgeknipt en ingekleurd met PITT pennen.

Voor de bloemen stempelde ik de 'Texture Stamp - Fallen Leaves' drie keer op wit papier met Archival Inkt 'Carnation Red'. Uit elke afdruk een cirkel geponst. De cirkels op de spread gekleefd. Stelen getekend met een zwarte pen en schaduw en highlights aangebracht rond de bloemen en de stelen.

I put three stamped birds on the fence and stamped grass at the bottom of the spread. I added details to the grass with a white pen. I finished the spread off by stamping a quote, adhering a few buttons and making marks with a pink paint marker.

Drie gestempelde vogels op het hek gezet en onderaan nog wat gras gestempeld. Details aangebracht met een witte pen. Knopen opgeplakt, tekst gestempeld en 'marks' gemaakt met een roze verfmarker.

The 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips' is the final stencil I made samples with for Darkroom Door.

De laatste stencil waar ik mee aan de slag ging voor Darkroom Door is de 'Small Stencil - Five Wonky Strips'. 

I learned from Rae Missigman it's possible to color a background with watercolor paint through stencils. It's a matter of not working too wet. I picked 5 colors and painted each strip with watercolor paint.

Van Rae Missigman leerde ik dat je perfect doorheen een stencil kan verven met aquarelverf. Het komt erop aan om niet te nat te werken. Dus 5 kleuren uitgekozen en elk hokje in een andere kleur geverfd.

I outlined each strip with a black fineliner and stamped the text using Archival Ink 'Jet Black'.

Elke strook omlijnd met een zwart pennetje en de tekst gestempeld met Archival Inkt 'Jet Black'.

The bird was stamped on a scrap of watercolor paper and colored with the same colors as I used on the background. 

De vogel op een restje aquarelpapier gestempeld en ingekleurd met dezelfde kleuren die ik gebruikte voor de achtergrond.

I'm sharing two clean and simple cards today.

For the backgrounds I picked 2 gel prints from my stash. Before pulling the prints I made a pattern into the wet paint using burlap, hence the grid pattern.

I looked for matching images through the 'Collage Sheets - Botanical Notes' set by Darkroom Door. I stamped on top of the photos with Archival Ink 'Jet Black'. I adhered the photos on the backgrounds and drew dotted frames with a black fineliner.

Twee simpele kaartjes vandaag.

Voor de achtergronden koos ik 2 mooie gel prints uit mijn voorraad. Vooraleer de afdrukken te maken drukte ik een stuk jute stof in de nog natte verf, vandaar het rasterpatroon. 

Bijpassende afbeeldingen gezocht in de 'Collage Sheets - Botanical Notes' set van Darkroom Door. Over de foto's heen gestempeld met Archival Inkt 'Jet Black'. De foto's op de gel prints geplakt en randjes getekend met een zwart pennetje.

On this card I again used the 'Small Stencil - Three Circles Set' by Darkroom Door.

I picked a colorful gel print from my stash to start with. I stamped dots, text and grid on top of the gel print with various Darkroom Door stamps using StazOn Ink 'Teal Blue' & 'Cactus Green' and white paint.

Voor dit kaartje werkte ik opnieuw met de 'Small Stencil - Three Circles Set' van Darkroom Door.

Ik koos een kleurige gel print uit om mee te beginnen. Tekst, stippen en een raster over de gel print heen gestempeld met verschillende Darkroom Door stempels en StazOn Inkt 'Teal Blue' & 'Cactus Green' en witte verf.

I created three flowers by applying modeling paste through the largest circle of the stencil.

Drie bloemen gemaakt door structuurpasta aan te brengen doorheen de grootste cirkel van de stencil.

I used one of the masks from the set on the flowers that overlap.

Ook een maskertje uit de set gebruikt bij de bloemen die mekaar overlappen.

After drying I colored the flowers with Gelatos. I applied pigment with the Gelatos sticks and spread the colors with my fingers. By making circular movements I tried to imitate roses.

To draw the stems I used a black pen.

Na het drogen de cirkels ingekleurd met Gelatos. Pigment aangebracht met de Gelatos sticks en de kleuren met mijn vingers verspreid. Door cirkelvormige bewegingen te maken geprobeerd om rozen te imiteren.

Stelen getekend met een zwarte pen.

On this photo you can see another brand new stencil by Darkroom Door, the 'Small Stencil - Five Strips'.

On today's card I used this stencil together with the 'Small Stencil - Three Circles' and the 'Small Stencil - Semicircles'.

Op de foto zie je nog een nieuwe stencil van Darkroom Door, de 'Small Stencil - Five Strips'. 

Voor de kaart van vandaag gebruikte ik deze stencil samen met de Small Stencil - Three Circles en de Small Stencil -Semicircles.

I made a pattern on my 15 x 15 cm gel printing plate using pan pastels. I applied a thin layer of white paint on top to pull the print.

Een patroon van strepen, cirkels en halve cirkels gemaakt op mijn 15 x 15 cm gel printing plate met pan pastels. Een dunne laag witte verf aangebracht om de print te maken.

Print and ghost print.

Twee prints kunnen maken.

The flower was stamped on a scrap of white paper. I added some black stamping on top of the gel print and drew a frame around the card with a black fineliner.

De bloem op een restje wit papier gestempeld en uitgeknipt. Verder op de achtergrond nog wat zwart stempelwerk toegevoegd en een randje getekend met een zwarte fineliner.

Darkroom Door also released new Collage Sheets this week. On the 3 cards I'm sharing today I used some of the largest images from the 'Botanical Notes' set. 

Naast stencils bracht Darkroom Door ook 'Collage Sheets' uit deze week. Voor de 3 kaarten van vandaag gebruikte ik enkele van de grootste afbeeldingen uit de 'Botanical Notes' set. 

For the first two cards I've chosen this beautiful flower print. Due to the soft colors it's perfectly possible to stamp a quote on top. 

Ik koos deze mooie bloemenafbeelding om er de twee eerste kaartjes mee te maken. De zachte kleuren laten het toe om er een quote overheen te stempelen. 

I adhered the image to a top fold white card and wrapped some pink thread with a few beads around the card.

Alles op een dubbele witte kaart geplakt en om af te werken een roze touwtje met kralen rond de kaart gewikkeld.

For this Sympathy Card I've chosen another image from the 'Botanical Notes' set.

Voor dit sterkte kaartje een andere afbeelding gekozen uit de 'Botanical Notes' set.

Pocket Fodder Book

 

I'm taking part in the 'FodderChallenge' on Instagram. One of the lessons was about making an accordion book.

Ik doe mee met de 'Fodder Challenge' op Instagram. Voor één van de lessen maakte ik dit accordeon boekje.

On the front and back covers I used gel prints made with alcohol inks.

Op de kaften voor en achter kleefde ik gel prints die ik maakte met alcohol inkt.

I found some very old paper flowers in my stash that I used to decorate the front cover. 

I took out my POSCA pen to add some withe details to the petals.

Hele oude bloemetjes opgevist uit mijn voorraad om de kaft mee te versieren.

Met een POSCA pen witte accenten aangebracht op de blaadjes.

The back cover was decorated with a vintage paper doll by Tim Holtz and a heart from my stash. 

Op de achterkant een afbeelding van Tim Holtz gekleefd samen met een hart uit mijn voorraad.

I did the paper weaving on the picture for a 'FodderChallenge' lesson as well.

Het papieren weefwerkje op de foto maakte ik voor een ander lesje van de 'FodderChallenge'.

The inside pages were folded out of one sheet of scrapbook paper.

De pagina's werden gevouwen uit één vel scrapbook papier.

Each inside page has a pocket to hold...fodder of course :)

For now I've put some scraps of gel prints inside the pockets.

Elke pagina heeft een 'pocket' om restjes in bij te houden natuurlijk :)

Voor nu stopte ik er restjes gel prints in.

I tore 2 strips from a piece of pink fabric to make the closure.

Voor de sluiting 2 repen gescheurd uit een stuk roze stof.
